The Kobe Dragons: Chapter 11

Kobe, Solaris City
Solaris VII, Lyran Commonwealth
3 February 3042

As captain of the Kobe Dragons, and with the backing of the general manager, Cera was able to successfully demand that her pilots stop spending so much damn time on public relations and focus on their training. They were MechWarriors after all, not actors or fashion models, and another holograph wasn’t going to help them in the arenas. The Dragons spent a lot of time in the simulators, which had to be reprogrammed to include the advanced Star League weaponry installed in Shinigami and Oni. Such knowledge was kept top secret to prevent other teams getting wind of it.
In the simulators they faced off against all of the other teams; at least as far as they were able to. While the computers running the simulator pods could be programmed to include all the known BattleMechs their opponents were using, including any variants, there was no way to accurately portray the tactics

Cera had insisted that as team captain she was the one to lead the Kobe Dragons, and she had been promised just that by the general manager, Jon Takakura. She had also made sure that it was a clause in her contract because this was Solaris and only an idiot doesn’t insist on agreements being written down. She knew Takakura was an honourable man, but he wasn’t the owner of the franchise. He could be overruled.
Some of the team owners had, predictably enough, tried to interfere with how the team was run, including everything from ideas about team uniforms to battle tactics. Takakura as general manager had managed to deflect many of these attempts; but not all of them. Utterly fearless, Cera had confronted the investors head-on with Garadun at her side and her contract in hand. That most were oyabun of the yakuza clans of Solaris City didn’t even make her flinch. She was not

While Aya sat in a folding chair in the ‘Mech bay of the Dragon’s Lair, watching Cera argue with Anna Yishina, the promotional director of the Kobe Dragons, and the stable’s official holographer, Benny Wu, she sipped her ginger ale and reflected on how much her life had changed in the past two weeks.
To start with she was no longer broke. The two years it had taken her to get to Solaris VII had consisted mainly of driving civilian worker ‘Mechs to earn enough money to buy passage on a JumpShip that would take her closer to her destination. This had left her with no savings and she’d been down to almost her last ryu when she received the fateful call from Garadun Morr asking her to come in for an interview. Which had in turn led to her place among the Kobe Dragons as a BattleMech pilot, which meant an excellent regular salary in addition to the likelihood of product e

Getting up in the morning had never been on Cera’s list of things she was good at. Even less so when she’d been out drinking the night before. But finding a cute little cat like Stinger snuggled beside her on the covers helped. Making an incoherent noise, she reached out from under the duvet and gave the kitty a few gentle strokes. Stinger let out a big yawn and purred contently. Cera yawned as well and looked blearily around at her dimly-lit surroundings. It was the spare room in Garadun’s condo, the one he’d turned into a combination of den and spare bedroom. She was tucked under the covers of the room’s very comfy futon.
Why was she... oh, right. They’d been out at the Blue Note Kobe nightclub the night before and she’d gotten drunk. Her mother never liked it when her daughter came home drunk, so she had avoided the entire scene by crashing at G

Word of the incident at the Snowbird spread across Kobe and spread quickly. The management of the bar had seen to it that the Kobe Police hadn’t been called. It would have been asking for trouble over what in the end had been a brief scuffle. But it was definitely worth talking about and, predictably, someone posted a blog on one of Solaris City’s BattleMech fan sites and the story went viral. The brass of the Solaris City Combat League were ecstatic. The amount of free publicity the story was generating was the kind of thing they dreamed of. They hadn’t even had the first match yet and already there was a rivalry. Which was always good for ratings.
When Cera stepped out the front door of her family home early Monday afternoon, her partner was waiting for her in his new sports car. Although she had her own Avanti, there was no point in taking two cars to go to the same me

Another week passed before Garadun was able to check out of the Bamboo Palace and move into his new digs. It wasn’t until the day after he met with Cera that all the red tape had finally cleared. After that, he had to go and do some serious shopping: the entire condo needed to be furnished. Cera was a very eager assistant when it came to this task. They drove not only all over Kobe but across all of Solaris City in their search for just the right kind of things he was looking for. Due to his preference for natural materials such as real wood, the final cost of kitting out his luxury apartment was staggering. But then he could afford it.
The resulting décor was basically eclectic Terran with a subtle Japanese influence. All the furniture was wood; the sofas and chairs covered in fine cloth and not leather. There were a lot of prints on the walls; he hated blank space. Curtains we

As he stood on the balcony of his hotel room and looked out over Kobe, Garadun felt quite content. More content than he had in a long time, actually. For one thing it was damned good to be planetside again, breathing real air with proper gravity beneath his feet. Since first leaving Solaris VII in March of 3038 he’d travelled from one end of the Inner Sphere to the other. He’d had his fill of space travel. Been there, done that, and you can bloody well keep it, thank you very much.
It was also rather nice to have a proper day-night cycle again. Gambilon had had “days” and “nights” each a month long, and it hadn’t been fun trying to acclimate to it. The planet itself was fine and the locals were great, but the round-the-clock Days and Nights he frankly wasn’t going to miss one damn bit.
The view from the hotel balcony was fantasti

For five tedious months they had travelled from the Magistracy of Canopus and all the way across the Free Worlds League to get to their destination: Solaris VII. When Cera finally emerged from the DropShip Lady K and stepped onto the wet ferrocrete tarmac of the Solaris Spaceport, she dropped to her hands and knees and kissed the ground.
After three long years she was home. Home to stay.
Distant Memory had jumped out of the Gambilon system on the ninth of June and arrived at Canopus a week later on the sixteenth. Located at the nadir jump point was an Olympus class recharging station; nearby was the Dainmar Majoris waiting to take them on their trip home. But before they could start, they had to transfer over their cargo. Shearling detached from Distant Memory and docked with the space station where the Lady K was already berthed. It

Gambilon, Magistracy of Canopus

When compared to the spaceports of places like Galatea, Solaris VII and other important Core worlds in the Inner Sphere – or even the spaceport on Canopus IV, the capitol world of the Magistracy of Canopus – the Stjörnaljós Spaceport barely even qualified as one. There was a lone control tower, three small runways for regular aircraft, and a patch of worn concrete large enough to accommodate a half-dozen DropShips. The so-called landing bays were nothing more than areas designated as such by lines painted on the tarmac. There were two aircraft hangars, an aging and modest terminal, a garage for vehicles and a maintenance building. That was it.
Yet despite its humbleness, today it was attended by a good number of people who were there to greet Cera and Garadun as they emerged from Shearling and came down the ramp to step onto the tarmac. Every member of the Fighting Fus

“Did you see that freebirth? I could not believe it!”
Juno looks up as she enters the Snow Leopard’s storage bay. Oliver and Carson are checking off the crated parts and equipment that has been lashed down onto pallets.
“What are you two going on about?”
“Star Commander!” Oliver jerks to attention, and hesitates. “I mean, uh, Juno. I was mentioning, well…”
“Do I have to drag it out of you, Oliver?”
“Neg. I was over at the hangar earlier, and I saw one of the freebirth astechs. A female.” The boy visibly shudders. “Pregnant.” He makes a gesture to indicate the size of the astech’s belly.
An icy shiver runs through Juno. As a trueborn, the very notion of ‘natural’ birth di

    “Captain Brigitte.”
Olafsdottír waves the two of them to the seats facing the desk in the outer room of her quarters. “Sit down, please.” She waits for them to settle in place before taking her usual seat. “I’ve got a lot to thank you for. Both of you.”
Matsunaka shrugs. “I just wish we could have got here quicker…”
Brigitte shakes her head. “Never mind. Your information kept that fight from turning messy. No civilians were hurt, none of my people were injured, and only one of the Jaguar pilots sustained serious wounds. From what my medic tells me, he may even recover.”

Amber Tyler frowns at the remark. “Look like what, Rainy? ‘Not human’?”
The Commando standing beside her halted Raven doesn’t shrug, but the tone of Rainy’s voice gives her that impression. “I guess so.”
Amber taps a control on her secondary console and brings up an image of two of the Smoke Jaguars, dirty and dejected, sitting side by side on a fallen tree trunk. Each has a foil thermal blanket draped over their shoulders, and each sports an empty pistol holster at their side. They handed over their sidearms without being asked.
She has to admit, Rainy has a point. These MechWarriors, if the tales are true, were born in a lab facility. A baby production line. The thought gives her

She can see that he is having trouble staying still for any length of time. He wants to be down there, in a ’Mech, taking part. That is a sentiment she can understand; after all, it is the particular purpose for her existence. Instead, he is stuck aboard this shuttle, still days out from New Exford, unable to have any more effect upon the outcome of the battle that is about to commence.
The choice of ’Mechs to fight this ‘Trial’ had been wholly automatic. Brigitte hadn’t even really thought about it. The machines that took part in the Parakoila operation are heading out to

“This is insane,” says Katsumi Kuramoto. “What did I do to them?”
“Nothing at all,” is Brigitte’s reply. “They’re simply being thorough. They want to put a whole family line in the grave, and you – and this Com Guard cousin of yours – are the only ones still alive. They’ve wiped out every single ‘Matsunaka’ who was a member of the Clans. You’re a loose end to be dealt with, Kat.”
Shaking her head as if to wake herself up, Katsumi sinks down into a chair in the Lodestar’s CIC. Horst reaches over and gives her shoulder a squeeze. He looks up at Olafsdottír. “We’ve got a plan?”

She is completely nude.
She doesn’t seem to notice it, either. She nods as she strolls over to one of the kitbags on the sofa and digs out some fresh underwear. “When are we leaving?”
“Uh. In about two hours. Once the crew’s run some checks on the drive systems.”

When I have writer's block, I frequently bounce around different settings in an attempt to break the block.

For the moment, I've returned to a very old idea of mine: Spindledrift. It's a D&D-style fantasy world of my own creation that's undergone countless changes and reworkings over the long years. Now, in its latest incarnation, it actually has an actual map with actual place names. I'm still tweaking and editing, but I can at least feel the possibilities. To that end I've decided to go Old School on its ass.

For the cast and monsters and magic and stuff, I'm returning to the classic 2nd Ed. AD&D game rules. Maybe not the same uber-wide range of possibilities that, say, Pathfinder has; but there's a simple, nostalgic charm there that I like. And as they clearly state in the 2nd Ed. PHB and DMG: the game belongs to you. So I've chucked out all that nonsense about level limits and class/race restrictions; but am otherwise using the game rules as-is.

Grab the multicoloured dice and let's get going.

History records that, just days from now, a tremendous upheaval took place as the ground cracked and broke apart, tornadoes spun counter to their nature, and even Godzilla bowed as you appeared upon the Earth to grace us with your art. And so it is wished upon you to have a Happy Birthday on that day....and a most excellent cake. :D (Big Grin)  Have your cake and eat it too
